Formed in 1999, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) collect and harness the expertise and resources of five schools already operating within the disciplines Geophysics and Volcanology: the National Institute of Geophysics, the Vesuvius Observatory, L 'International Institute of Volcanology, Geochemistry Institute of Fluid, the Institute for Research on Seismic Risk.
INGV is born with the aim of collecting a single pole in the main national scientific reality in the fields of geophysics and volcanology. It cooperates with many universities and other institutions of national and international research and is currently the largest European institution in the field of geophysics and volcanology, and one of the largest in the world. The headquarters are located in Rome, Milan, Bologna, Pisa, Naples, Catania and Palermo.
The primary mission of the INGV is the monitoring of geophysical phenomena in both fluid and solid parts of our planet. All'INGV entrusted with the monitoring of seismicity of the entire national territory and activity of Italian volcanoes through networks of technologically advanced, distributed throughout Italy or concentrated around active volcanoes.
The signals obtained from these networks are broadcasted in real time to the operations' rooms of Rome, Naples and Catania, where specialist staff present 24 hours on 24, processes them to obtain the parameters of the event taking place.
INGV works closely with the Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) and has special links with the Department of Civil Protection and other authorities responsible for emergency management, both on a national and local scale. It Furthermore, cooperates with the Ministries of Environment, Education, Defense and Foreign Affairs in the framework of national and international strategic projects.
